In a March 3rd interview with Piers Morgan, Kirk Cameron defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman and does not need to be redefined. To further clarify, he stated that homosexuality is "unnatural (and) that it (is) detrimental and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization".
Predictably, the gay community didn't like it. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation issued a statement in response to the actor's recent appearance on the CNN program, The Hollywood Reporter said.
"In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character," said Herndon Graddick, senior director of programs at GLAAD, in a statement. "Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation."
"With an increasing number of states recognizing marriage equality, Americans are seeing that marriage is about committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for each other and that gay and lesbian couples need equal security and legal protection. That's not 'redefining' anything."
I take my hat off to Kirk Cameron on his bold stand. If you listen to the video of the interview, Morgan puts the question to Cameron: "is homosexuality a sin?" Had Cameron answered directly his comments would have been dismissed and ignored. But he did not. He questioned the value of homosexuality to society. This is like Columbus driving the Spanish flag into the ground, claiming the land for the king. He forces people to reassess what they really believe about homosexuality and marriage. It forces people to deal with it in our present reality. Had Cameron answered in the affirmative about it being a sin, he would have lost his audience. He would have distanced himself from the majority instead of engaging them in discussion and debate. Cameron's answer demands that we take him seriously. Why is homosexuality detrimental to society - surely there is evidence of such behavior causing the moral fabric in society to be degraded? What are some of these societies that have fallen into disrepute because of their choice of lifestyle? Is there a pattern in ancient societies from their golden beginnings to their awful endings that might give evidence of Mr. Cameron's statement being true? But when we read Mr. Graddick's retort, we are not persuaded. His arguments just are not convincing. Simply because they appeal back to society instead of something far more substantial. For if we can point to history that societies have fallen because of a degradation of moral integrity, then how are we to understand Mr. Graddick's answer when he appeals to society as if homosexually represents our Golden Age? I would have said America's Golden Age was during the years after we won the war for independence against England. We were an industrious and creative people, bustling with activity and morally upright and true. We loved our neighbors and treated people with respect and honor. But Mr. Graddick believes that what society believes in is what we should believe. We should all have the same views and that this is what makes our nation strong. No, on the contrary; this is what makes our nation a nation of good slaves. For when we persecute those who have different opinions yet call for "tolerance" at the same time; we really are the most intolerant of people.
Good for you Kirk Cameron for answering in a most wise way. Your answer is rich and meaningful. Full of depth and reason. Not so to you Mr. Graddick. Your admonishment to look to society, which is so indecisive and ever changing, as proof of how we need to align our lives is hollow and empty. Moreover, the admonishment to look to society to gage our belief system is demonstrative of a failing society; one that will inevitably end in total and complete destruction. A society that embraces homosexuality as "normal" is a society that cannot last much longer. We need more Kirk Camerons who believe in the Word of God which speaks the last word on those who practice such behavior; "For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for the error" Romans 1:26-27.
